A DEFINING POINT IN AMERICAN HISTORY

Conclusion

The California Gold Rush gave birth to many important issues of United States coinage, a few examples of which are illustrated and described on the remaining pages of this issue of American Rarities magazine. Had it not been for the Gold Rush it is highly unlikely that any of these coins would have ever been created. In fact, much of today's thriving rare coin market would be nonexistent had gold not been discovered at Sutter's Mill more than a century and a half ago. Perhaps the Gold Rush's most significant impact on American numismatics was not a coin at all. It was a mint. A branch mint was established at San Francisco in 1854 due to the large supplies of gold in California at the time. This mint eliminated the expensive, lengthy, and sometimes hazardous necessity of transporting gold to facilities in the East. Now, nearly a century and a half later, the San Francisco Mint has created some of America's rarest and most legendary works of numismatic art. All coins struck at the facility are distinguished by the unique "S" mintmark. Over the years, the San Francisco Mint developed quite a reputation for quality workmanship. The remaining pages of this edition of American Rarities are devoted to several of the types and denominations of coins that came out of the Gold Rush. Any one of these, or similar coins, would make a valuable addition to your portfolio or collection. Call Blanchard at 1-800-880-4653 for details.
