Austrian 100 Corona Gold Bullion Coins
The Austrian 100 Corona: More Value Per Ounce
When Americans were once again granted the right to own gold in 1974, one of the few gold bullion coins available for purchase was the Austrian 100 Corona. Although the market is now crowded with beautiful bullion designs, this handsome coin is still one of the best values per ounce, making it an excellent choice for serious investors.
These coins are 0.900 fine (21.6 karat), making them relatively sturdy and durable compared to 24 karat, or 0.999 fine coins.
Austrian 100 Coronas: Good News for Seasoned Bullion Investors
Each 100 Corona weighs just under an ounce, at 0.9802 ounces (gold content only), a nonstandard size among today’s predominant 1 oz. bullion coins such as the American Eagle and Maple Leaf. The good news is that the premium placed by the market on these coins over their gold content is generally less than for the full 1 oz. coins – which means more gold for your money! The Austrian 100 Corona is widely recognized and easily purchased and sold, which means that although its size is not currently “standard,” you can easily liquidate it. And the low premium paid upon purchase is easier to recover, making it more attractive in the short term.
Although minted originally in both Austria and Hungary between 1908 and 1914, the most common Austrian 100 Corona coins on the market are dated 1915, and were minted beginning in 1916 as “re-strikes” to commemorate the reign of Franz Josef I, Emperor of Austria from 1848 to 1916.
