Larger Size, Lower Premium
Twenty percent larger than the American Gold Eagle bullion coin, the Mexican 50 Peso contains 37.5 grams (1.2057 oz) of gold in an alloy of 90% gold and 10% copper (21.6 karat). First minted in 1921, the Mexican 50 Peso has the same gold purity as popular pre-1933 U.S. gold coins such as the Saint-Gaudens, but its lower premium offers investors the opportunity to own a stunning piece of history for less.
The obverse depicts the “Angel of Independence,” a winged statue erected in Mexico City to commemorate the Centennial of Mexico’s successful war of independence. “El Angel” holds a laurel wreath, symbolizing victory, and a broken chain, symbolizing freedom. The legendary volcanos Ixtaccihuatl and Popocatepetl (named after two star-crossed lovers of ancient Mexican folklore) rise in the background. The obverse features the Mexican coat of arms.
