Invest In Centuries of Riches
Mozart, Schubert, Strauss... the riches of Austria’s classical music
tradition are rivaled only by the acclaimed designs the Austrian Mint
has been steadily producing for more than 800 years. The Vienna Philharmonic
brings together both traditions. First struck in 1989, it has come
to represent the great artistic and cultural contributions Austria
has made; its likeness has been featured on Austrian Airlines aircraft,
and an award-winning 2004 minting of the coin is displayed in the Central
Bank of Austria’s famed Money Museum.
Founded in 1194 in Vienna, the Austrian Mint is one of the oldest
yet most technologically modern mints in the world. When Austrian King
Leopold received a ransom payment from crusading English King Richard
the Lionhearted in an amount of silver worth more than $2 billion in
today’s dollars, he created the mint to strike this huge pile of silver
into Austrian currency. The mint’s excellence is carried on today in
its Vienna Philharmonic gold coins.
Elevated Design, Rising Value
The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra is the pride of Austria and the theme of this coin. The obverse side features the words “WIENER PHILHARMONIKER” arched over a finely detailed montage of orchestral string and wind instruments: violins, cellos, string bass, harp, Viennese horn, bassoon. The reverse features a detailed relief of the Great Organ in the Golden Hall (home of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra) under the arched words “REPUBLIK OSTERREICH” and the stamped weight, purity, year of issue and denomination in Euros/Schillings.
